RuneScape Kingdoms: The Roleplaying Game was developed as a companion to the RuneScape Kingdoms board game line. Set within the iconic world of the MMORPG RuneScape by Jagex, the project translated the setting into a streamlined, rules-light tabletop RPG experience.
My brief was to adapt the established RuneScape Kingdoms brand identity into a text-heavy core rulebook format. The challenge was to create a design system that connected visually with the board game while also reflecting the broader RuneScape universe, all while remaining neutral between the two major versions of the game: Old School RuneScape and RuneScape 3.
The final book spans more than 200 pages and builds on the visual foundations established in RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg, carrying its design language into a long-form publishing format. The layout incorporates a wide range of artwork from Jagex’s extensive creative library, alongside an exclusive cover illustration and a specially produced collector’s edition.
Designs That Didn’t Reach The Gates of Gielinor
During the development the visual style of the Special Edtion of the book, a number of designs were drafted to help capture a sense of the RuneScape world.
The example opposite takes the Saradomin Godsword and places it centre stage of the front cover, with the rear of the book housing an interpretation of the game minimap and the star found on the hilt of same sword.
Exclusive for Free RPG Day
For 2024’s Free RPG Day, a handy quickstart version of the core rulebook was created, including an exclusive adventure.
The adventure featured a number of bespoke character portraits to help visualise the characters that players would meet on their journey.
