Originally founded as Humphreys Brothers Ltd in 1924, Umbro began as a small sportswear company in Wilmslow, on the outskirts of Manchester. Over time, the brand became synonymous with producing “garments of distinction” for the sports market, particularly in football.
By 1952, the company was manufacturing the England football strip for the first time. Six years later, when Brazil lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy wearing shirts made in Wilmslow, Umbro had firmly established itself as a global brand—a legacy that continued with the next three World Cup winners also sporting Umbro kits.
The Archive Newspaper drew on the company’s rich garment history, celebrating a selection of notable designs in sports fashion while serving as an inspirational resource for designers and media relations.
The project was produced in collaboration with The Newspaper Club, specialists in printing on tabloid and broadsheet formats, providing a large canvas for creative design. Each shirt was carefully styled and photographed to ensure a consistent and polished visual presentation.
