Terra Mystica is a critically acclaimed euro-style board game for two to five players, where fantasy factions compete to expand their territories over six rounds.

In 2025, Steamforged Games announced a collaboration with Feuerland Spiele to produce a definitive edition of the title. This edition would bring together all previously released expansions, deluxe components, and newly updated artwork to unify the experience into a single, cohesive release.

My role was to visually support and art direct the new edition, establishing a consistent tone of voice across the internal graphic direction while coordinating and managing the visual output of external studios and contributing artists. This further expanded to packaging design, video and audio direction, and illustrating elements of artwork in conjunction with the project’s artist, Jacqui Davis.

Community feedback played a key role throughout development, requiring rapid iteration across packaging, boards, character illustrations, and numerous tabletop components. This process was time sensitive, but played an important part in the ongoing marketing of the crowdfunding campaign.

The final result is a definitive edition that respectfully nods to earlier versions of Terra Mystica while introducing a more contemporary visual style to attract a new generation of players.

Refreshing The Factions

Working closely with artist Jacqui Davis, a suite of updated portraits for each faction was produced. Each design took elements from the original artwork as inspiration, delivering a more consistent visual identity for the wide range of factions that the player can choose.

Translating The Visual Identity To The Campaign Page

Once the visual DNA of the board game and its components was established, key elements of the brand identity and texture were carried through into the crowdfunding campaign.

Working closely with the Marketing Team and an external crowdfunding agency, the messaging and visual components were shaped to ensure a clear and consistent tone of voice. Figma was used as a collaborative tool to build, review, and refine sections of the crowdfunding page both ahead of, and throughout, the campaign.

A Truly Terraformed Trailer

Once the crowdfunding campaign for Terra Mystica: Special Edition was ready to launch, a supporting trailer was created for promotion and marketing. The objective was to capture the tone and identity of the updated edition, combining hero shots of the game’s components with an immersive audio track to maintain engagement.

This involved working with the multimedia team to develop the storyboard and video direction, while supporting audio production. The result was an engaging trailer that communicated the campaign’s key beats for both marketing and crowdfunding teams.
