Folloing the successful campaigns for the tabletop version of Resident Evil 2 & 3, Steamforged Games would develop and publish Resident Evil: The Board Game. The title would focus on the original game that started the franchise in 1996, bringing Spencer Mansion to the tabletop.

As part of the crowdfunding campaign, it was clear that an exclusive special edition of the packaging would be needed for backers. Working with the lead game designer, a concept was developed that would take the original Biohazard release for the game and interpret it into the packaging for the board game release.

Reseident Evil: The Board Game would go on to be funded by thousands of backers, with overwhelming positivity aimed at the visual direction of the box art.

Early on in the design process, it was identified that a key selling point for the packaging would be to emulate the original 1996 Japanese region release of Resident Evil (also known as Biohazard).

Capcom would provide the original artwork files used in the 1996 box art, allowing for the creation of an instantly recognisable version of the artwork, reproduced for the board game.
